GSTC Invites Public to Comment on New Guidelines for Sustainable Destinations

Washington, D.C. (Earth Day) April 22, 2012- The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC – http://new.gstcouncil.org/) announces the release of their Criteria for Destinations. The criteria are a set of guiding principles and performance indicators designed to lead destination managers, communities, and businesses on a path to sustainability: maximizing social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits while minimizing negative impacts. The Destination Criteria complement the existing GSTC Criteria for Hotels and Tour Operators, which have become a worldwide standard for tourism sustainability.

“While many destinations have been impacted by unsustainable development in the past, more and more destinations are now realizing the importance of sustainable tourism and are seeking outside support and guidelines to help set them on the right path,” says Erika Harms, Executive Director of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. “The GSTC’s Destination Criteria outline 45 specific actions that a destination can take to choose a different future—to make their cultural and natural attractions a source of delight for visitors, and a source of employment for locals, for many generations to come.”

The GSTC invites all interested parties to comment on or suggest improvements to the Destination Criteria until June 2, 2012 at: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/876118/GSTC-Destination-Criteria-Consultation-2012-English

We would like to share a very relevant video for those hotels considering “going green” produced by the  Georgetown University. It  considers consumer skepticism and confusion about “green” behavior and  being green translates to the bottom line?

Understandinggreen consumerism can help hotels explore the environmental market, and home in on likely prospects. Green consumers generally are are frank in their intentions, with a growing commitment to greener life and almost always consider their environmental practices as inappropriate and they  look for businesses that are taking strong steps and have carried out a commitment to improve rather than expect a perfect performance.

On the other hand, they tend to overstate their own green actions, including the number of green products they actually use. They desire  environmental protection to be easy, and not to implying big sacrifices as well as they tend to distrust companies’ environmental claims. Finally, they lack knowledge about environmental issues, and don’t regard themselves assess the scientific information about environmental impacts. However, at the same time consumers are eager to learn about them, and this means that consumer education is one of the most effective strategies.

Back to the roots. That is the key to success according to this returning trend.

These are the four rising lessons:
Lesson number one:

Quality: Keep giving good service in confortable facilities will always be the first step. It is too obvious, but in a low-cost service, returning to quality is your differential factor.
